Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours) to ensure maximum flower production. 'Blue Moon' thrives in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Because the mature vine becomes quite heavy and woody, provide a sturdy, permanent support structure like a heavy-duty arbor or pergola at the time of planting.

Pruning

Prune twice a year for best results. Perform a structural prune in late winter to maintain the framework and remove half of the previous year's growth. A second light trim immediately after the first bloom flush in summer helps encourage the subsequent second and third rounds of flowering.

Fertilizing

This variety is a light feeder. Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer or a layer of rich compost in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers later in the season, as this can stimulate foliage at the expense of the signature blue "chains" of flowers.

Winter Preparation

'Blue Moon' is exceptionally cold-hardy (down to -40°F). For young plants in Zones 3-4, apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone and consider a burlap wrap for the lower trunk during the first two winters to protect the graft and encourage establishment.
