Select a site with acidic, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Plant the root ball slightly above the soil line (1-2 inches) to prevent crown rot. Provide a sheltered location away from harsh, drying winter winds.

Prune only after the flowering cycle has finished in late spring. This prevents the removal of next season's buds. Focus on removing dead or crossing branches to maintain an upright, symmetrical shape.

Apply an acid-loving fertilizer (such as an Azalea/Camellia blend) in early spring as new growth begins. A second light feeding can be done in mid-summer, but avoid late-season fertilizing to prevent frost-sensitive new growth.

Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (pine bark or needles) to protect the root system. In Zone 6 or during extreme cold snaps, wrap the shrub loosely in burlap or horticultural fleece to protect flower buds from freezing.
