The Camellia japonica 'April Remembered' is a masterpiece of the "April Series," specifically bred by Dr. Clifford Parks for its exceptional cold hardiness. This vigorous, evergreen shrub is a showstopper in late winter and early spring, producing a profusion of large, semi-double blooms. Each flower features luscious pink petals that fade into a delicate creamy-white center, highlighted by a crown of golden-yellow stamens. Its glossy, deep-green foliage provides year-round structure and elegance, making it an ideal choice for gardeners who want the classic beauty of a Camellia even in cooler climates where other varieties might struggle.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 6-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper; ensure the top of the root ball sits slightly above the soil line to prevent "wet feet."

Pruning

Prune immediately after flowering finishes in late spring. Focus on removing dead or crossing branches and thinning the interior to improve air circulation. Avoid pruning late in the season, as you may remove next year's buds.

Fertilizing

Apply a slow-release, acid-loving fertilizer (like an Azalea/Camellia blend) in early spring and again in early summer. Avoid fertilizing after August to prevent soft new growth that could be damaged by frost.

Winter Preparation

In Zone 6, plant in a protected location away from harsh, drying winds. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (pine bark or needles) to insulate roots. In extreme cold snaps, loosely wrap the shrub in burlap for extra protection.
