The Azalea White Lights is a premier choice for northern gardeners seeking reliable spring beauty and extreme cold hardiness. As part of the prestigious Northern Lights series developed by the University of Minnesota, this deciduous shrub is celebrated for its ability to withstand temperatures as low as -35°F. In late spring, it produces a spectacular display of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers accented with a delicate yellow blotch, emerging from soft pink buds. Its dark green summer foliage transitions into a stunning bronze-purple in the autumn, providing multi-seasonal interest for any landscape.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-7 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole 2-3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the root flare is slightly above the soil grade to prevent rot.

Pruning

Prune only immediately after flowering in late spring. This allows the plant to set buds for the following year. Remove dead or diseased wood and thin out dense areas to improve air circulation.

Fertilizing

Apply an acid-based fertilizer (formulated for Azaleas/Rhododendrons) once a year in early spring before new growth begins. Avoid fertilizing after mid-July to prevent late-season growth sensitive to frost.

Winter Preparation

In colder zones, apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch (wood chips or pine needles) to protect shallow roots. For young plants in windy sites, a burlap screen can prevent desiccation from harsh winter winds.
