The Climax Rabbiteye Blueberry is a southern favorite, prized for being one of the earliest ripening varieties of the rabbiteye species. This vigorous, upright shrub produces heavy yields of medium-sized, sweet, and firm berries that are perfect for fresh eating, baking, or preserves. Beyond its delicious fruit, Climax offers incredible ornamental value; its bell-shaped spring flowers and stunning scarlet-red autumn foliage make it a versatile addition to any landscape. As a "rabbiteye" variety, it is exceptionally heat-tolerant and more pest-resistant than many other blueberry types.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and incorporate organic matter like peat moss or pine bark. Ensure the site has excellent drainage, as they do not like "wet feet." Space plants 6–10 feet apart.

Pruning

Prune in late winter while dormant. For young plants, remove low-growing or spindly branches. For mature plants (6+ years), remove about 15-20% of the oldest canes at ground level annually to stimulate new, productive growth.

Fertilizing

Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants (like 12-4-8 or cottonseed meal). Apply in early spring when growth starts and again after harvest. Avoid fertilizers containing nitrates; ammonium or urea-based nitrogen is preferred.

Winter Preparation

Apply a 4-6 inch layer of organic mulch (pine needles or bark) around the base to protect the shallow root system from temperature swings. While hardy, Climax requires 400-450 "chill hours" (below 45°F) to ensure fruit set the following spring.
