The 'Brightwell' Rabbiteye Blueberry is a crown jewel of the Southern edible garden. Developed by the University of Georgia, this variety is celebrated for its incredible vigor, high yields, and adaptability to the unique heat and humidity of the Southeast. In late spring, it is adorned with dainty, bell-shaped white flowers that give way to clusters of medium-sized, sky-blue berries. The fruit is exceptionally firm with a sweet, classic blueberry flavor that remains fresh long after picking. Beyond its delicious harvest, 'Brightwell' provides year-round ornamental value with its blue-green summer foliage that transforms into a brilliant, fiery red-orange in the autumn.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5) and excellent drainage. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and mix in peat moss or pine bark. Ensure the crown is level with the soil line. For best results, plant with another rabbiteye variety (like 'Tifblue' or 'Powderblue') to maximize pollination.

Pruning

Prune in late winter while dormant. Focus on removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches. For mature plants (6+ years), remove about 15% of the oldest, thickest gray canes at the base to stimulate new, productive growth and maintain an open canopy for sunlight.

Fertilizing

Use an acid-loving fertilizer (like Holly-tone or ammonium sulfate) in early spring and again in early summer. Avoid nitrate-based nitrogen. For young plants, wait until they are established before applying full-strength fertilizer to avoid root burn.

Winter Preparation

'Brightwell' is highly cold-hardy, but benefit from a 4-6 inch layer of organic mulch (pine needles or bark) applied in late fall. This protects the shallow root system from temperature fluctuations and helps maintain consistent moisture through the winter months.
