Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-10 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with well-drained soil. While adaptable to various soil types, it thrives in rich, organic loams. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. If planting as a vine, provide a trellis or support structure immediately. Space plants 3-5 feet apart for groundcover use.

Pruning

Prune primarily to shape the plant or control its spread. The best time to prune is shortly after the main spring bloom cycle to avoid cutting off next year's flower buds. Use clean, sharp shears and be aware of the milky, sticky sap which can irritate skin.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release general-purpose fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. For established plants in fertile soil, supplemental feeding is often unnecessary; over-fertilizing can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Winter Preparation

Though 'Madison' is the most cold-hardy variety (down to Zone 7), young plants benefit from a thick layer of mulch at the base to protect roots. In the northern limits of its range, provide a sheltered location away from harsh, drying winter winds to prevent foliage burn.
