The Fragrant Fountain Japanese Snowbell (Styrax japonicus 'Fragrant Fountain') is a stunning, weeping ornamental tree that brings elegance and a sweet, intoxicating aroma to any landscape. Unlike the standard species, this cultivar maintains a compact, narrow form with branches that cascade gracefully toward the ground, making it an ideal "living fountain" for smaller gardens or patio containers.

In late spring, the tree is smothered in thousands of crisp white, bell-shaped flowers that dangle from chartreuse stems. Its dark green foliage remains lush throughout the summer before transitioning to a vibrant golden-yellow in the fall.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with moist, acidic, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. If planting in heavy clay, amend with 50% compost. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface to avoid rot.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring while dormant. Remove any dead, crossing, or damaged wood. You can prune lower branches to expose the trunk and enhance the "tree" look.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or an acidic plant food in early spring before new growth begins. A second light application can be done in early fall. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which can reduce flower production.

Winter Preparation

Apply a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch around the base (keeping it away from the trunk) to insulate roots. In colder northern zones (Zone 5), provide a sheltered location to protect the weeping branches from heavy snow loads or drying winds.
