Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 4-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with at least 6 hours of sun for the best foliage color. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Amend heavy clay with organic compost to ensure well-drained soil.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. You can also lighty trim after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second burst of colorful new foliage and potentially more blooms.

Fertilizing

Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for shrubs in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this plant is naturally vigorous and thrives even in average soil conditions.

Winter Preparation

In colder regions, apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base in late fall to protect the root system. No heavy wrapping is necessary as it is very cold-hardy.
