Plant in the spring or early fall. Choose a location with moist, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. If planting as a groundcover, space plants 10-12 inches apart. It performs best in partial to full shade but can handle sun in cooler climates if kept consistently moist.

As an evergreen to semi-evergreen plant, it requires minimal pruning. In late winter or very early spring, before new growth begins to emerge, "comb" through the plant with gloved hands to remove dead blades or shear the entire clump back to 2-3 inches to refresh the foliage for the new season.

Silver Sceptre is not a heavy feeder. Apply a light, balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of organic compost around the base of the plant in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause the plant to become leggy or lose its tight clumping habit.

In its hardy zones, no significant protection is needed. In the coldest reaches of Zone 5, apply a light 2-inch layer of mulch around the base (but not over the crown) to protect the roots from heaving during freeze-thaw cycles. Do not cut back for winter; the foliage provides protection for the crown.
