The Japanese Sacred lily is a tropical-looking evergreen herbaceous perennial that has an upright, clumping, and vase-like form.  It has insignificant flowers, but they produce bright red berries that persist into the winter.

Planting

Thrives in full to deep shade; direct afternoon sun will scorch the leaves. Plant in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Avoid low spots where water collects, as stagnant water can cause crown rot.
Pruning

Minimal maintenance required. Simply remove old, yellowed, or damaged leaves at the base in early spring to keep the plant looking tidy. This plant grows slowly, so heavy pruning is never necessary.
Fertilizing

Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a top-dressing of compost. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can weaken the plant’s naturally tough, leathery leaf structure.
Winter Preparation

Highly cold-hardy and requires little winter protection. However, a 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps maintain consistent moisture levels and prevents "frost heaving" in areas with frequent freeze-thaw cycles.
