Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with full sun (6+ hours) and well-drained soil. Dig a hole 12–18" deep; plant bare roots with "eyes" pointing up, strictly 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Planting too deep is the primary reason peonies fail to bloom.

Pruning

Deadhead spent blooms throughout the spring to maintain a tidy appearance. Do not prune green foliage during summer, as it stores energy. Once foliage turns yellow or brown after the first frost, cut stems to the ground (leaving 2" of stem).

Fertilizing

Peonies are light feeders. Apply a low-nitrogen, balanced fertilizer (like 5-10-10) in early spring when shoots are 2–3 inches tall. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leaves but inhibit flower development.

Winter Preparation

After cutting foliage to the ground in late autumn, remove and discard debris to prevent disease. For the first winter only, apply a light layer of straw; established plants are extremely cold-hardy and require no protection.
