Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in full sun with rich, well-draining soil. Set the root clump so the "eyes" (pink buds) are no more than 1–2 inches below the soil surface; planting too deep will prevent blooming.

Pruning

Remove spent flower heads after blooming to maintain a tidy appearance. In late fall, after the first frost has turned the foliage yellow or brown, cut the entire plant to the ground to prevent disease.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced granular fertilizer (like a 10-10-10) or bone meal in early spring when new shoots are a few inches tall. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to lush leaves but fewer flowers.

Winter Preparation

Once the foliage is cut back, you may apply a light layer of mulch for the first winter to prevent root heaving. For established plants, winter chill is necessary to set buds, so avoid heavy covering.
