'Bowl of Beauty' is a Japanese form Peony that produces masses of large, up to 12" across, blossoms. The deep rose outer petals encircle a fluffy central mound of pale yellow strap-like petals that fade to creamy white over time. They are nicely fragrant and borne on comparatively short, sturdy stems with good green foliage.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in full sun in rich, well-draining soil. Dig a hole wide enough to spread roots and ensure the pink "eyes" are positioned 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Planting too deep will prevent the plant from flowering.

Pruning

Deadhead spent flowers by cutting the stem down to a strong leaf to maintain a tidy appearance. In late fall, after the first hard frost has turned the foliage brown, cut all stems to the ground (2 inches above soil) to prevent disease.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced granular fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in early spring when new shoots are a few inches tall. A second application of bone meal or a low-nitrogen fertilizer after blooming can help support root health for the following year.

Winter Preparation

These are cold-hardy plants that require winter chill to set buds. For the first winter, you may apply a very light, loose layer of mulch (like pine needles) to prevent frost heaving, but remove it promptly in early spring.
