The Straight & Narrow® Japanese Holly is the ultimate vertical solution for modern landscapes. Unlike the older 'Sky Pencil' variety, this selection is celebrated for its rigid, upward-reaching branches that refuse to splay or flop under heavy snow or intense rain. Clad in glossy, dark green, boxwood-like foliage, it provides a year-round "exclamation point" of color. Its slender footprint makes it a premier choice for framing entryways, creating narrow privacy screens, or adding a sophisticated structural element to patio containers.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 6-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with well-drained, acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the soil surface to prevent crown rot. Backfill with native soil and water deeply to settle air pockets.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required to maintain its columnar shape. To tidy up the plant or maintain a specific height, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use sharp bypass pruners to remove any "rebel" branches that stray from the vertical form.

Fertilizing

Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer formulated for acid-loving evergreens in early spring as buds begin to swell. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers in late summer, as they can stimulate tender new growth that is susceptible to winter damage.

Winter Preparation

In colder regions of Zone 6, apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base (avoiding the trunk) to insulate roots. Ensure the plant is well-watered through late autumn; evergreens are prone to "winter burn" if they enter the frozen months in dry soil.
