Bring a splash of "blueberry ice cream" colors to your late summer landscape with the Blueberry Smoothie™ Rose of Sharon. This standout deciduous shrub is prized for its spectacular, fully double blooms in a rare bluish-purple hue. Unlike many other varieties, Blueberry Smoothie™ is nearly sterile, meaning you can enjoy its prolific flowering from mid-summer through frost without the mess of invasive seedlings. Its upright, vase-shaped habit and rich green foliage make it a perfect choice for vertical interest in tight spaces or as a stunning flowering hedge.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water deeply immediately after planting to settle the soil.

Pruning

This shrub blooms on new wood, so it is best to prune in late winter or early spring. Lightly prune to maintain shape or remove dead/damaged wood. You can also "limb it up" to create a small tree form.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as a 10-10-10) in early spring as new growth begins. A second light application can be done in early summer to support continuous blooming.

Winter Preparation

In northern zones (Zone 5), apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base in late fall to protect the root system. Avoid overwatering during the dormant winter months to prevent root rot.
