'Diane' witch hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane") is a deciduous shrub that brings exceptional color to the winter garden. Clusters of spicy-scented, Copper-red flowers appear along the bare branches in late winter, followed by lush, green summer foliage and brilliant yellow, orange, and red fall color. Its graceful vase-shape form makes it an excellent specimen plant for year round seasonal interest.

Select a site with organically rich, acidic, and well-drained soil. While it tolerates various soil types, avoid locations with standing water. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep to encourage root expansion.

Prune in spring immediately after flowering is complete. This prevents the removal of next year’s flower buds. Focus on removing "suckers" (shoots growing from the base) and any dead or crossing branches to maintain its elegant vase shape.

Apply a balanced, slow-release general-purpose fertilizer in early spring before new growth emerges. Mulching with organic matter like compost or shredded bark helps maintain the acidic soil pH it craves.

'Diane' is exceptionally hardy and requires little winter protection once established. However, ensuring consistent moisture throughout the preceding summer and fall is vital for a robust winter bloom display.
