Introduce a touch of year-round sophistication to your woodland garden with Disporopsis pernyi, commonly known as Evergreen Solomon’s Seal. Native to the shaded mountain forests of China, this hardy perennial is prized for its arching, purple-speckled stems and glossy, leathery dark green foliage that remains vibrant even in the depths of winter. In late spring, delicate, bell-shaped white flowers with a light lemon fragrance dangle gracefully beneath the leaves, followed by ornamental blue-purple berries in the fall. It is a slow-spreading, non-aggressive rhizomatous plant that creates a lush, low-maintenance carpet in those tricky shaded spots where other plants struggle.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 6-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with rich, organic, well-drained soil. This plant thrives in deep to partial shade. When planting, space rhizomes about 12-15 inches apart to allow for its natural clumping spread.

Pruning

Very low maintenance; no regular pruning is required. However, it is beneficial to trim back any winter-damaged or tattered foliage in late January or early February to make room for fresh spring growth.

Fertilizing

Feed once a month during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or top-dress with compost to maintain soil richness.

Winter Preparation

As an evergreen, it holds its leaves throughout winter. In colder zones (Zone 6), applying a layer of mulch around the base in late fall helps protect the rhizomes from extreme freeze-thaw cycles.
