Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. In regions with intense summer heat, some afternoon shade is beneficial to prevent foliage scorch. 'Black Dragon' thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Amend heavy clay soils with organic matter like compost to improve drainage and aeration.

Dig a planting hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with amended soil, gently tamping to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.

Pruning

'Black Dragon' Japanese Cedar naturally maintains a dense, conical shape with minimal pruning requirements. Any necessary pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Avoid heavy shearing, which can disrupt its natural form.

Fertilizing

Fertilize your 'Black Dragon' Japanese Cedar in early spring, just before new growth emerges. Use a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer specifically formulated for evergreens or acid-loving plants. A product with a ratio similar to 10-10-10 or 12-4-8 is typically suitable. Broadcast the fertilizer evenly around the base of the plant, extending out to the drip line.

Winter Preparation

Hardy in USDA Zones 5-9. Before winter sets in, ensure the plant is well-watered. Apply a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or pine needles, around the base of the plant. Extend the mulch out to the drip line, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture buildup. For young plants, providing protection from harsh winter winds with burlap screens can be beneficial.
