Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with acidic to neutral, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper. For bare-root trees, soak roots for 6–24 hours before planting. Apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required as it naturally maintains an elegant, layered shape. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring while dormant to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. You may also "limb up" the lower branches to expose the attractive mottled bark.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release acidic fertilizer (such as one for Azaleas or Hollies) in early spring before new growth begins. For young trees, fertilize lightly in March, May, and July. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this promotes excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Winter Preparation

Ensure the tree is well-watered throughout the fall until the ground freezes to prevent winter desiccation. While extremely cold-hardy, younger trees can benefit from a fresh layer of mulch around the base for root insulation. No heavy pruning or fertilizing should occur in late fall.
