The Cercis canadensis 'Royal White', commonly known as the Royal White Redbud, is a luminous standout in any spring landscape. Unlike the traditional pink-purple redbuds, this cultivar is celebrated for its larger, pristine white blossoms that blanket bare branches in early spring. Discovered as a native seedling in Illinois, it is prized not only for its elegant aesthetics but also for its superior cold hardiness and compact, vase-shaped growth habit. Its heart-shaped foliage transitions from a fresh green in summer to a warm, buttery yellow in autumn, making it a true three-season specimen.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 4-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with well-drained soil. Redbuds have a deep taproot and do not transplant well once established, so choose a permanent location. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Avoid planting in areas with standing water.

Pruning

Prune in late spring immediately after flowering to shape the tree or remove dead/crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning in winter as it will remove the season's flower buds. Remove "suckers" (new shoots from the base) annually.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) in early spring before new growth appears. For young trees, organic compost or manure worked into the topsoil can also provide excellent results.

Winter Preparation

Young trees benefit from a commercial tree wrap to prevent "sunscald" on the bark. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base (avoiding the trunk) to insulate the root system from freezing and thawing cycles.
