Select a location with well-draining, acidic soil high in organic matter. Space plants 3-4 feet apart to accommodate their mature spread. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and set the plant slightly higher than the surrounding soil surface to prevent stem rot. Water deeply upon installation and maintain consistent soil moisture during the first two growing seasons while the root system establishes.

Prune lightly in early spring after the winter bloom cycle finishes and before the first flush of new spring growth appears. Avoid late summer or autumn pruning, as Camellia sasanqua sets flower buds on new wood formed during the spring and summer season. Trim back erratic branches or shape gently as needed to maintain a low, dense mound.

Apply an acidic, slow-release camellia/azalea fertilizer in late spring after initial flowering concludes and active growth begins. Avoid over-fertilizing or applying high-nitrogen feeds late in the summer, which can spur tender growth vulnerable to early frost damage.

Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic pine bark or hardwood mulch around the root zone to insulate shallow roots against cold fluctuations and preserve soil moisture. In the colder ends of USDA Zone 7, ensure plants are protected from harsh, drying winter winds and provide extra mulch around the base prior to severe winter freezes.
