The 'Jerry Hill' Camellia is a crown jewel of the winter garden, celebrated for its exceptional cold hardiness and classic elegance. This evergreen shrub produces stunning, medium-sized formal double blooms in a rich, rose-pink hue that resemble perfectly frosted roses. Its dense, upright habit and lustrous, dark green foliage provide year-round structure and beauty, making it a standout choice for gardeners in cooler climates where other Japanese Camellias might struggle. Whether used as a sophisticated hedge, a container specimen, or a focal point in a woodland garden, 'Jerry Hill' delivers reliable, high-impact color from late fall through early spring.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with morning sun and afternoon shade. Dig a hole 3-4 times wider than the root ball but no deeper. Plant the camellia 1-2 inches above the soil grade to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot. Backfill with a mix of native soil and organic compost.

Pruning

Prune immediately after the blooming cycle ends in spring. This prevents you from cutting off next year’s buds, which set in late summer. Focus on thinning dense interior branches to improve airflow and cutting back leggy growth to maintain a compact, upright shape.

Fertilizing

Use an acid-forming fertilizer (like those for Azaleas or Camellias). Apply three times a year: early spring, late spring, and mid-summer. Avoid fertilizing after August, as new growth stimulated late in the season is highly susceptible to winter frost damage.

Winter Preparation

In the northern part of its range (Zone 7), site the plant in a sheltered area away from harsh winter winds. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it away from the trunk) to insulate roots. In extreme cold snaps, loosely wrap the plant in burlap for protection.
