Named in honor of the legendary plantsman and director of the NC State Arboretum, the Camellia japonica 'Dr. J.C. Raulston' is a masterpiece of Southern horticulture. This vigorous evergreen shrub is celebrated for its stunning, 4-inch anemone-form blooms in a vibrant, jewel-toned red that arrive when the rest of the garden is still in its winter slumber. Its glossy, deep-green leathery foliage provides a high-end, structured look year-round, making it as much a functional privacy screen as it is a seasonal showstopper.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in well-draining, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5) rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the top of the root ball is slightly above the soil line to prevent crown rot.

Pruning

Prune immediately after the blooming cycle ends in mid-spring. This prevents you from cutting off next year's flower buds, which form on old wood. Limit pruning to shaping and removing dead or damaged wood.

Fertilizing

Apply a slow-release, acid-loving plant fertilizer (like holly-tone) in early spring and again in early summer. Avoid fertilizing after July, as late-season growth can be damaged by early frosts.

Winter Preparation

In the colder end of its range (Zone 7), plant in a sheltered location away from harsh, drying winds. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (pine straw or bark) to protect the root system from freezing.
