Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 4-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with well-drained soil and a pH of 6.5–7.0. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the soil surface to prevent rot. Apply a 1-2 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and cool roots.

Pruning

Prune annually in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. This promotes air circulation and prevents the center from becoming thin. Avoid pruning in late summer or early fall, as this stimulates tender growth that can be damaged by frost.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in late fall or early spring. Avoid fertilizing in the summer. If the foliage shows "bronzing" (turning orange-brown) in winter, a nitrogen application in spring will help restore the deep green color.

Winter Preparation

Water plants deeply in late autumn before the ground freezes, as evergreen foliage continues to lose moisture in winter. Siting plants in locations sheltered from strong winter winds and harsh afternoon sun will minimize winter bronzing. Gently brush off heavy snow loads to prevent branch breakage.
