Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with well-draining soil; Buddleia is highly sensitive to "wet feet." Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant it slightly "high" to encourage water to drain away from the crown. Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring once new green buds begin to emerge. Cut the stems back to roughly 12-18 inches to refresh the plant, as flowers form on new growth. Regularly deadhead spent blooms throughout the summer to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like a rose food) once a year in early spring as new growth starts. Avoid over-fertilizing with high nitrogen, which can lead to excessive foliage but fewer flowers. Stop fertilizing two months before the first frost to avoid soft new growth.

Winter Preparation

Avoid pruning in the fall, as the old stems protect the crown from cold. Apply a thin layer of mulch over the root zone, but keep it several inches away from the main stems to prevent rot. In Zones 5-6, the plant may die back to the ground but will grow back vigorously in spring.
