Experience the breakthrough in butterfly bush breeding with the Pugster Pinker™. This compact dynamo defies logic by producing the massive, full-sized flower spikes typically reserved for 8-foot shrubs on a frame that stays under 3 feet. Each vibrant pink bloom features a tiny, glowing orange eye that acts as a beacon for pollinators. With its thick, sturdy stems, this variety offers significantly improved winter hardiness over older dwarf varieties, making it a reliable, low-maintenance centerpiece for small gardens, patio containers, and colorful borders.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with excellent drainage. In clay soil, plant the root ball slightly higher than the surrounding soil line to prevent "wet feet." Do not amend the soil with heavy organic matter; these plants prefer average to poor soil.

Pruning

Prune in spring only, once new green growth begins to emerge. Cut stems back to just above the new leaf buds. Avoid fall pruning, as this can lead to winter die-back.

Fertilizing

Generally requires little to no fertilizer. If desired, apply a light, granular fertilizer formulated for shrubs in early spring. Avoid late summer/fall fertilization, which can stimulate tender growth prone to frost damage.

Winter Preparation

In colder zones (5-6), ensure the plant is well-mulched around the base, but do not pile mulch against the stems. The thick stems of the Pugster series are naturally bred for better winter resilience.
