Pink Icing® is a culinary and ornamental masterpiece from the Bushel and Berry® collection. This compact, mounded shrub provides a four-season color show: spring foliage emerges in breathtaking shades of pink and deep green, which matures to a cool blue-green in summer. By winter, the leaves transform into a stunning iridescent turquoise-purple. Beyond its beauty, it yields a heavy crop of large, robustly flavored, sweet blueberries in mid-summer. Perfect for patio containers or as a low, colorful hedge, it is as hardworking as it is beautiful.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-10 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with at least 6 hours of full sun. Use highly acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5-5.5). If planting in-ground, amend the soil with 50% peat moss. For containers, use an acid-loving potting mix (like those for azaleas).

Pruning

Prune in late winter while dormant. For young plants, only remove dead wood. On mature plants (3+ years), remove 1/3 of the oldest canes annually to encourage new, fruit-bearing growth.

Fertilizing

Apply an acid-loving fertilizer (rhododendron/azalea formulation) twice a year: once in early spring and again in late spring. Avoid manure. Occasional coffee grounds can help maintain soil acidity.

Winter Preparation

In colder zones (Zone 5), mulch heavily around the base or move container plants to a sheltered, unheated garage. Ensure the soil is moist before the ground freezes; water sparingly if stored indoors.
