Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Requires highly acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.2). If your soil is not naturally acidic, incorporate peat moss or elemental sulfur. Plant in full sun for the best fruit production and ensure the site has excellent drainage to avoid root rot.

Pruning

Prune in late winter while dormant. Focus on removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches. For mature plants, remove about 20% of the oldest canes each year to encourage new, productive growth from the base.

Fertilizing

Use an acid-loving plant fertilizer (like those for Azaleas). Apply in early spring before growth starts and again after fruit set. Avoid fertilizers containing nitrates or chlorides, as blueberries are sensitive to these salts.

Winter Preparation

Rabbiteye blueberries are hardy, but a 3–4 inch layer of organic mulch (pine bark or needles) is essential to protect the shallow root system from temperature swings and to maintain necessary soil moisture.
