Select a site receiving full sun for optimal flowering performance, though partial shade is tolerated. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root container and equal in depth. Ensure the soil is well-draining; while tolerant of sandy, clay, or poor soils, roots perform best when kept out of standing water. Water deeply upon planting to establish the root system.

Spiraea × vanhouttei blooms on old wood from the previous season. Prune immediately after flowering in early summer to preserve next year's flower buds. Remove older, woody stems near the base to encourage fresh growth and retain its natural, cascading vase shape. Avoid severe formal shearing, which ruins its arching habit.

Apply a balanced, slow-release balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) in early spring just as new growth emerges. Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen formulas, as this promotes excessive foliage growth at the expense of floral blooms. Top-dressing with organic compost annually provides sufficient organic nutrients.

Extremely winter hardy (down to Zone 3). Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch or shredded bark around the base of the plant prior to winter to insulate root systems and conserve soil moisture. Ensure the shrub receives thorough watering in late autumn before the ground freezes.
