Herbaceous peonies are easy, deer-resistant perennials needing cold winters, sun, good drainage, and spring moisture. Best planted in fall, they develop strong roots and abundant blooms. Young divisions may produce semi-double flowers first year, maturing to full doubles with time and proper support.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zone 3-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Ensure the "eyes" (buds) on the roots are placed no deeper than 1-2 inches below the soil surface; planting too deep will prevent blooming.

Pruning

Deadhead spent blooms to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage energy to return to the roots. In late autumn, once the foliage has turned yellow or died back after the first frost, cut stems to the ground and remove debris to prevent disease.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring when new red shoots emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can result in lush leaves but fewer flowers. Adding a layer of compost annually is often sufficient.

Winter Preparation

Peonies are extremely cold hardy and require a "winter chill" to set blooms. For the first year, apply a light layer of mulch or evergreen boughs for protection, but ensure it is removed in early spring so the eyes aren't buried too deep.
