Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zone 3-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with well-drained, fertile soil. Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots, ensuring the "eyes" (growth buds) are positioned no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Planting too deep is the most common reason peonies fail to bloom.

Pruning

Deadhead spent flowers immediately after they fade to maintain a clean look. In late autumn, after a hard frost has turned the foliage yellow or brown, cut the entire plant back to the ground (about 1 inch high) to prevent overwintering diseases like botrytis.

Fertilizing

Apply a low-nitrogen or balanced fertilizer (such as 5-10-10) in early spring when the new red shoots are about 2-3 inches tall. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which promote lush leaves but few flowers. A top-dressing of organic compost each spring is highly beneficial.

Winter Preparation

These are incredibly hardy perennials that actually require a period of winter chill to reset their bloom cycle. For newly planted peonies, apply a light layer of mulch for the first winter only. Remove the mulch in early spring before new growth emerges to avoid burying the eyes too deep.
