Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is highly adaptable but prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil. When planting, dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and ensure the top of the root ball is slightly above the soil line to prevent rot.

Pruning

'Stellar Ruby' has a naturally tidy habit and requires little pruning. If shaping is desired, prune immediately after the spring bloom finishes. This allows the plant to set buds for the following year. Avoid pruning in late summer or fall.

Fertilizing

Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or an acid-loving plant food (like Azalea/Camellia fertilizer). A second light application in early summer can encourage lush foliage, but stop fertilizing by August.

Winter Preparation

Hardy to Zone 7, but young plants benefit from protection against harsh, drying winter winds. Apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch (pine bark or needles) to insulate the roots and maintain consistent moisture levels.
