Choose a location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill, pack firmly, and water deeply to settle air pockets.

Pruning is rarely necessary due to its slow, compact growth. However, it responds beautifully to shaping into hedges or topiaries. For best results, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, or immediately after summer flowering.

Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens or shrubs once a year in early spring. This supports healthy, deep-green foliage and vigorous growth throughout the season.

Being a hardy evergreen, it requires little winter maintenance. In its northernmost range (Zone 6-7), applying a thick layer of mulch around the base in late fall helps protect the root system from extreme temperature fluctuations.
