Plant in rich, moist, slightly acidic to acidic soils ($pH < 6.8$) for best performance. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equal in depth. Ensure the root collar sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil grade. Space plants 3-4 feet apart for hedge applications. Tolerates heavy clay, wet locations, and urban conditions once established.

Prune in early spring before new growth emerges to maintain shape or encourage denser habit. 'Nigra' naturally stays tighter than the species, but light shearing can be done to create formal hedges. Remove root suckers popping up at the base if a strictly maintained footprint is preferred.

Apply an acidic, slow-release evergreen fertilizer (such as an Holly-tone blend) in early spring before fresh growth begins. Avoid high-pH soils or alkaline additives like lime, which can cause iron chlorosis (yellowing foliage). Mulch with pine needles or bark to help keep soil acidic and retain moisture.

Very cold-hardy down to Zone 4. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the root zone in late autumn to conserve soil moisture and protect shallow roots from freeze-thaw cycles. In exposed, high-wind locations in Zone 4, water thoroughly before the ground freezes to prevent winter desiccation.
