Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Plant in well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Thoroughly water upon installation and apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping mulch away from the main trunk to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required due to its naturally dense, mounded shape. Lightly trim or shear in late spring or early summer after the initial spring flush of growth to shape or maintain size. Avoid heavy pruning late in the fall.

Fertilizing

Apply an acidic, slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring before new growth appears. Avoid heavy nitrogen application late in the summer to prevent tender new growth that could be damaged by winter frost.

Winter Preparation

Ensure the plant is well-watered late into the autumn before the ground freezes. In colder northern microclimates or wind-exposed sites, apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone and protect foliage from harsh, drying winter winds with a burlap screen or anti-desiccant spray.
