Unleash fiery color in compact spaces with Dragon Baby™ Panicle Hydrangea! Part of the Bloomin' Easy® collection, this ultra-dwarf panicle hydrangea delivers massive impact in a small footprint. Starting in mid-summer, strong, non-flopping stems produce lush, lime-green flower cones that transition into crisp white, eventually maturing into vibrant shades of deep pink and red through autumn. Perfect for patio containers, low borders, and small urban gardens, Dragon Baby™ offers year-round structural interest, exceptional cold hardiness, and virtually maintenance-free elegance.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location with full sun to partial sun (at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best bloom color). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equal in depth. Amend soil with compost or organic matter to ensure good drainage. Set the plant in the hole so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, tamp down firmly, and water thoroughly. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture, keeping mulch away from the main stems.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, prune stems back by about one-third of their length to encourage vigorous growth and large flower heads. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering shrubs in early spring as new leaves emerge. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leafy growth at the expense of flower blooms.

Winter Preparation

Dragon Baby™ is exceptionally hardy down to Zone 3. Apply a fresh 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone in late autumn to insulate roots against freeze-thaw cycles. Protect container-grown plants by moving them to a sheltered location or burying the pot in the ground before severe winter freezes.
