Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Legend of the Small Fothergilla thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5. Amend heavy clay or sandy soils with organic matter at planting time to improve drainage and nutrient retention. Choose a location that receives full sun to part shade; full sun will encourage the most vibrant fall foliage color. Water thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during its first growing season and during dry spells.

Pruning

This compact shrub generally requires minimal pruning. If needed, prune immediately after flowering in late spring to early summer. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain plant health and appearance. Light shaping can be done to achieve a desired form, but avoid heavy pruning as it can detract from its natural, attractive habit. Legend of the Small Fothergilla forms a neat mound naturally.

Fertilizing

Benefits from fertilization in early spring before new growth emerges. Use a slow-release, granular fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants, such as those recommended for rhododendrons or azaleas. Alternatively, a top dressing of compost around the base of the plant in spring can provide a gentle source of nutrients and improve soil structure.

Winter Preparation

Apply a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark, pine needles, or leaves, around the base of the plant in late fall. This mulch helps conserve soil moisture and moderate soil temperature. Ensure the plant is well-watered before the ground freezes. Young plants in colder zones (USDA Zone 5) may benefit from additional protection in their first winter.
