Bring the first rays of spring sunshine to your landscape with the Magical® Gold Forsythia. This stunning deciduous shrub is the ultimate "harbinger of spring," famously known for its extra-large, rich golden-yellow flowers that completely shroud its bare stems before the leaves even emerge. Unlike older varieties, 'Kolgold' features a more compact, mounded habit and a "bottom-to-top" bloom habit, ensuring every inch of the plant is glowing with color. Once the floral show concludes, deep green foliage provides a lush, clean backdrop for your summer garden. It is exceptionally hardy, deer-resistant, and adaptable, making it a reliable choice for both novice gardeners and seasoned landscapers looking for a high-impact focal point or a brilliant low hedge.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-8 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Choose a location with full sun for the most prolific blooming, though it will tolerate part shade. Plant in well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Backfill with soil, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground, and water thoroughly to settle.

Pruning

Prune immediately after spring flowering. Since forsythia blooms on "old wood" (last year's growth), pruning after mid-July will remove next year's flower buds. For a natural look, remove about 1/3 of the oldest stems at ground level every few years to encourage vigorous new growth.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for trees and shrubs in early spring before new growth appears. This helps support the heavy energy demand of the blooming cycle and the subsequent flush of green foliage.

Winter Preparation

Magical® Gold is cold-hardy down to USDA Zone 5. In colder regions, apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to insulate roots. No significant winter wrapping is required, as this variety is bred for resilience.
