Planting

Don't Panic in Spring: Clethra is notoriously "late to wake up." It might still look like a bundle of dead sticks in May while everything else is green. Give it time; it's just a heavy sleeper.

Pollinator Magnet: As the name suggests, hummingbirds love it, but it’s also a primary nectar source for bees and butterflies during the "summer slump."

Suckering: It has a habit of spreading slowly via underground runners. If you want a tidy mound, just snip those suckers at the base once a year.

Pruning

Blooms on new wood. Prune in late winter or very early spring if needed.

Fertilizing

Prefers acidic, organic-rich soil. It is very salt-tolerant.

Winter Preparation

This variety is exceptionally hardy (down to Zone 3). Ensure the soil is moist before the first hard freeze. In late fall, apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to protect the roots and retain moisture through the dormant season.
