The 'Winter's Snowman' Camellia is a versatile, upright evergreen shrub that serves as a luminous focal point in any landscape. In the spring, its new foliage emerges in a striking burgundy-red before maturing into lustrous, dark green leathery leaves. As autumn fades into winter, delicate pink buds burst into semi-double, anemone-form flowers of pure white with a golden center. With its exceptional cold hardiness (thriving down to Zone 6) and elegant columnar habit, it is the perfect choice for a sophisticated privacy screen, an informal hedge, or a stately specimen plant in a woodland garden.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 6-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper; ensure the top of the root ball is slightly above the soil line to prevent root rot. Provide a sheltered location away from harsh, drying winds.

Pruning

Pruning is rarely necessary but should be done immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring. Lightly thin the interior to improve air circulation or prune to maintain a columnar shape. Avoid late-season pruning, as this removes next year’s flower buds.

Fertilizing

Use a slow-release, acid-forming fertilizer (specifically labeled for Azaleas, Camellias, and Rhododendrons) in early spring after the blooms have faded. A second light application can be done in early summer, but avoid fertilizing after July to prevent tender new growth from winter damage.

Winter Preparation

Apply a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch (pine bark or needles) around the base to insulate roots. In Zone 6 or during extreme cold snaps, wrap the plant in burlap or horticultural fleece to protect flower buds from desiccation. Ensure the plant is well-watered before the ground freezes.
