Select a location with well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but slightly shallower. Ensure the top of the root ball is 1-2 inches above the soil line to prevent crown rot. Mulch heavily to keep roots cool and moist.

Prune immediately after flowering finishes in the spring, but before new flower buds set in July. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain airflow. Lightly shape to maintain its upright, compact habit.

Use a slow-release, acid-loving fertilizer (similar to those for Azaleas or Rhododendrons). Apply in early spring after blooms fade and again in mid-summer. Avoid fertilizing after July to prevent tender new growth from being damaged by early frost.

While cold-hardy, younger plants benefit from a thick layer of organic mulch to insulate the roots. In Zone 6, plant in a sheltered area protected from harsh, drying winter winds. Avoid south-facing walls where rapid thawing can damage frozen buds.
