The Camellia japonica 'Silver Waves' is a show-stopping evergreen shrub that brings elegant luminescence to the shaded corners of your garden. Renowned for its large, semi-double blooms, this variety features pristine, silvery-white petals with distinctive "wavy" edges that dance around a prominent center of golden-yellow stamens. Set against a backdrop of glossy, leathery, dark-green foliage, the 5-inch wide flowers appear from late winter to early spring, providing a rare and refreshing burst of life when the rest of the landscape is often dormant. Whether used as a stately specimen, a flowering privacy screen, or an artistic espalier against a wall, 'Silver Waves' offers year-round structure and sophisticated seasonal beauty.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 7-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a location protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper. Ensure the soil is acidic (pH 5.5-6.5), rich in organic matter, and well-draining. Plant the top of the root ball slightly above the soil line to prevent crown rot.

Pruning

Prune only after flowering has finished in the spring to avoid cutting off next year’s buds. Lightly shape the plant to maintain its natural upright habit. Thinning out interior branches can improve air circulation and light penetration, leading to larger blooms.

Fertilizing

Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants (like Azalea/Camellia food) in early spring after blooms fade. A second application in mid-summer can support bud development for the following winter. Avoid late-season fertilizing, as new growth may be damaged by frost.

Winter Preparation

Apply a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch (like pine bark or needles) around the base to insulate shallow roots, keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter. In Zone 7, consider a burlap wrap or frost cloth during extreme cold snaps to protect flower buds from "bud drop."
