Part of the famous Northern Lights series developed by the University of Minnesota, the Golden Lights Azalea is an absolute game-changer for gardeners in cold climates. This exceptionally hardy deciduous shrub produces massive, fragrant clusters of golden-yellow flowers in late spring. Beyond its spring show, the plant features lush green foliage with superior mildew resistance that transitions into a stunning bronzy-red in the autumn.

Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 3-7 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant so the top of the root ball is slightly above ground level; this protects its shallow, fibrous roots from suffocation.

Pruning

Prune only immediately after flowering is finished in late spring. This timing ensures you don't remove next year's flower buds. Focus on removing dead or crossing branches and thinning for better air circulation.

Fertilizing

Apply an acid-based fertilizer (like those for Rhododendrons) in early spring and again in early June. Avoid feeding after mid-July, as new growth stimulated late in the season will not have time to harden before winter frosts.

Winter Preparation

Maintain a 2-4 inch layer of wood chips or pine needles around the base to insulate roots. In very exposed or windy areas, a burlap screen can help prevent winter burn, though this cultivar is cold-hardy down to -30°F.
