Plant Care

Will this plant thrive in your climate?

Make sure you live within USDA Zones 5-9 by checking our Grow Zone Guide.

Planting

Select a site with full sun exposure, ideally receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, to ensure abundant flowering. Wisteria thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Heavy clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Carefully remove the plant from its container, loosen any circling roots, and place it in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.

Pro tip: For best results, plant near a sturdy support structure such as a pergola, arbor, fence, or wall.

Pruning

Pruning Wisteria brachybotrys 'Shiro Kapitan Fuji' is essential for promoting flowering and maintaining its shape. Perform two main pruning sessions annually. The first, in late winter (January-February), involves cutting back side shoots to 2-3 buds from the main stem. The second occurs in mid-summer (July-August), where vigorous long shoots are shortened to about 5-6 leaves.

Fertilizing

Wisteria generally does not require heavy fertilization. Over-fertilizing can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. If your soil is poor, apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer with a low nitrogen content in early spring before new growth begins. Avoid applying fertilizer directly at the base of the trunk; spread it evenly around the drip line.

Winter Preparation

Generally hardy in its recommended grow zones. In colder regions, a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall can help insulate the roots from extreme cold. Ensure the plant is well-watered before the ground freezes, as this helps protect the roots. Young plants may benefit from additional protection during their first few winters.
